The Amelia Island Museum sees itself as the caretakers and disseminators of that exciting local history, which it shares not only through a wonderful variety of exhibits, but also by providing a multitude of programs throughout the community for all ages. The Museum also protects and shares local history with genealogists, homeowners and authors by providing a modern research facility.

Preservation Brief 48: Preserving Grave Markers
in Historic Cemeteries

This Preservation Brief focuses on a single aspect of historic cemetery preservation—providing guidance for owners, property managers, administrators, in-house maintenance staff, volunteers, and others who are responsible for or are interested in preserving and protecting grave markers. Besides describing grave marker materials and the risk factors that contribute to their decay, the Brief provides guidance for assessing their conditions and discusses maintenance programs and various preservation treatments.

Cemetery Resource Protection Training (CRPT)

The Cemetery Resource Protection Training workshop focuses on cemetery care and protection. Participants explore cemeteries as historical resources while learning about laws that protect them, conserving headstone and markers, managing cemetery landscapes, and practicing hands-on headstone cleaning with a D-2 solution. By the end of the course, participants are well-versed in issues surrounding basic protection of historic cemeteries and are encouraged to fill out at least one Florida Master Site File to record a historic cemetery over the next year.
